I turned 30 years old this year!🎉🎊
And when I think of how beautiful my birthday celebration turned out to be, I almost can't believe that I was actually considering not having a celebration at all...

A few weeks ago, my friend Lindsey and I visited the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) Orphanage in Nairobi.
The SWT is best known for its orphan elephant rescue missions in Kenya. 🐘After rescuing these young orphaned elephants from the wild, the Trust takes them through a rehabilitation process; and when they are ready, the elephants are released back into the wild. Aside from elephants, SWT also rescues rhinos and other wild species. The Trust opens its doors to visitors every day from 11:00 am - 12:00 pm (except on Christmas Day). During this time, one of the keepers gives an educational talk about the work the Trust does and also shares information about how visitors can adopt an elephant. This past summer, we stayed at the Leopard Beach Resort and Spa for a few days and it turned out to be the perfect 'welcome' back home.
It's been a while since we went on a family holiday. And although not all of us could make it this time around, it was nice to be able to spend a few nights at a resort located on the Kenyan coast with my mum and my sister. It was the first local holiday I've been on since I started my travel blog, and I can honestly say that the hospitality here at home is just as good as it has been elsewhere - if not better. 😉 I also don't think I'll ever get tired of pointing out how big a role friendly staff plays in making guests feel comfortable at a holiday resort - and it was quite evident here. Although I've lived most of my life in Kenya, I'd never been on a safari until earlier this year...
This past summer, my mum, my sister, and I spent a wonderful night at The Sarova Salt Lick Lodge in Tsavo East National Park, Voi. We arrived at the lodge in the afternoon, having been warned not to get there too late, as it would be hard for us to go in with the wild animals roaming around. As we waited to go to our bedroom, we had some refreshments and toured the premises. The lodge is comprised of huts that sit on tall stilts, creating enough space for the animals to roam freely on the ground without any human disturbance. The distance from the ground also provides guests with a perfect view of the watering hole, where the animals come to quench their thirst from time to time. Last week, I spent a few nights at a four-star hotel called Golden Tulip in Zoetermeer.
I specifically chose to stay here because of its proximity to The Hague, as I would be running a few errands there over the next few days. The hotel is also located about ten minutes away from the nearest tram station, making it easy for me to catch the tram that goes directly to The Hague Central Station from there. |
