They say a picture is worth 1,000 words. Well, I'm not sure about that word count, but I'd certainly say that each picture has a story to tell...
This week on the blog I'm telling short stories of things that I'm grateful for through pictures that I've taken in the last couple of months. One of my keywords for 2019 is simplicity. And although we are mostly used to giving thanks for the big things that happen in our lives, I'm learning that there are many little, simple things to give thanks for on a daily basis as well. With that said, here are some of the things I've come to appreciate in the first quarter of the year...

At the beginning of this year, I moved back to the Netherlands and it took me quite a while to get settled down - what with resuming my studies and finding a new place to call home.
Everything eventually fell into place; and after the stress of looking for a new house had worn off, the excitement of starting a new chapter in a new home replaced it. It was closely followed by the excitement of travelling again - this time to Gran Canaria! Gran Canaria is the biggest of the Spanish islands that make up the Canary Islands. The average temperature there at the time was about 21 degrees Celsius - 14 whole degrees more than the temperature here in the Netherlands - which is one of the main reasons why my sister, Sandra, and I chose to holiday there. Not only was I looking forward to getting some much-needed R&R on this trip, but I was also really looking forward to seeing her, my nieces, and my nephew again! I must admit that my main reasons for coming to Thailand had very little to do with learning in a school setting and more to do with exploring and experiencing the Thai people's culture first-hand.
I was so excited about living in Asia for four months, riding elephants 🐘(lol), and visiting the many beautiful places in Thailand. Even though I had a feeling they'd probably be more to this trip than met the eye, I didn't think much of it then. It was only when I was having a conversation with a friend in the school canteen one afternoon that it dawned on me just how much more was going on beneath the surface... Visiting Italy was a dream come true!
After visiting Spain, I'd already started thinking of which country I'd like to go to next, and for some reason, Italy came to mind. I made plans to visit the country twice, and both times my plans didn't work out. But as they say "The third time's a charm!" 😉 Everything eventually fell into place, and soon I was packing my bags and getting ready to travel to another new country with my mum... The Netherlands is such a beautiful country, and I can't think of a better place for me to have chosen to complete my studies.
Leiden, especially - which is where I have been living for the past year or so - is a lovely city filled with friendly people who are always willing to help. |
