Rarely do I go on vacation and ask myself, “Where’s the food I’m being served coming from?” But hopefully our recent visit to Ololo Safari Lodge will change that… My sister and I visited Ololo Safari Lodge early this month, and while we were there we got to go on a tour of their farm. The farm at the Lodge is where they grow their vegetables and spices, as well as rear ducks and chickens. They also have a cow called Joyce, which they get their milk from every morning. Ololo Farm uses sustainable farming techniques, composting systems, and recycled water to take care of its farm produce, and was recently granted organic status by Kenya Organic Agriculture Network (KOAN). As we toured the farm, the gardeners told us the names of the herbs we had trouble identifying and enlightened us on the best way to grow specific spices and vegetables that they have been growing there for years (see my Instagram for more of the farm). Some of the ones I recognized were thyme, oregano, collard greens (sukuma wiki), lettuce, cabbage, and the edible flower, nasturtium - which is actually good for your health.😉 Although I’d initially been looking forward to the farm tour solely out of curiosity, I found myself eager to learn more and more about everything grown and reared there – especially since it supplies a large part of the ingredients used in the meals served at Ololo. I was also inspired to be more intentional about finding out where my meals come from – not just when I’m on vacation but also when I’m doing my grocery shopping. Ololo Farm also produces duck meat, chicken meat, and eggs for sale in select supermarkets in Nairobi. A tour of the Ololo Farm is part of the package for guests staying at Ololo. However, you can also book a farm tour with Ololo independently, which also includes a tour of the lodge, a two-course lunch, and use of their swimming pool while you're there. The farm tour is available every Monday - Saturday, and you have the option of either touring the farm in the morning before having your lunch, or in the afternoon after enjoying your meal. Costs for the tour are as follows: Adults (over 16 yrs old): Ksh. 4,000 Children (5 - 15 yrs old): Ksh. 2,500 Children (under 5 years old): Ksh. 1,500 *Make sure you book in advance by emailing info@olololodge.com or calling +254 (0) 708 844 818. - ✗O✗O.
