Pannenkoekenhuis (Pancake House in English) is a small restaurant in Leiden that serves the largest pancakes I've ever eaten in my life! 😯 The first time I tried one of their pancakes was a few weeks after I had moved to the Netherlands. By then, I'd already made the decision to step out of my comfort zone in terms of food and try something new every now and then. So I chose to have a savoury (as opposed to my usual sweet) pancake fried with bacon, cheese, mushrooms and onions. But after trying that combination, I decided that sometimes it's best to just stick to what you're used to. Lol. Eager to wash the bad taste of my first experience out of my mouth (quite literally 😄) , I decided to try yet another pancake at Pancake House, but this time I decided to go for a sweet one... So one Spring evening, my rommate Paula and I made our way there after class. Seeing as the outer section of the restaurant wasn't open yet, we decided to sit inside. As soon as we were comfortable, a waitress came to our table to take our orders. Paula ordered a banana pancake with chocolate sauce, while I ordered a plain pancake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, whipped cream & some chocolate sauce as well. As we waited for our pancakes to be prepared, we each enjoyed a hot cup of Chocomel (what the Dutch call 'hot chocolate' or 'drinking chocolate'). ☕ The large pancakes cost about €10 each or more - depending on what toppings you choose - while the hot drinks cost about €3 each. Shortly after placing our orders, our pancakes were served. After my first few bites, I already knew I'd made the right decision this time. Not only did the chocolate and vanilla flavours work well together, but they complemented the pancake perfectly. Due to their large size, they are also quite filling and could count as a meal.
If you enjoy pancakes as much as I do, you should definitely try out the ones at Pannenkoekenhuis when in Leiden. Who knows, you might enjoy the savoury ones more than I did; otherwise, there's always the choice of a sweet one or ordering one of each with a friend and sharing them between yourselves. 😉 Their opening hours are as follows: Sun - Mon: 12:00pm - 9:00pm Tue - Sat: 11:00am - 9:00pm Christmas Day and New Year's Day - closed Boxing Day:12:00pm - 9:00pm Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve: open until 5:00pm - ✗O✗O.
