Dining while on holiday is usually straightforward - especially if you're staying at a hotel, as most of them have pre-planned meals and mealtimes. However, the experience is different when you opt to stay in an Airbnb. Last December, my family and I stayed at a villa in Diani. And for the duration of our stay there, our meals were prepared by a private chef.
He arrived early in the morning (at around 7.00 am) to start our breakfast and left at 5.00 pm in the afternoon after cooking our supper. Based on our experience, I thought I’d share with you the advantages and disadvantages of having a private chef while on holiday in the hopes that it’ll help you decide whether or not to hire one on your next vacation.

With a new year comes new cravings!🍕
Truth be told, pizza isn’t exactly a “new craving” for me. I’ve always enjoyed it as a cheat meal, but for some reason the craving for pizza has been much stronger than usual this year. Whenever I am craving pizza, I usually order in. However, a few weeks ago I had the opportunity to dine out at Lucca Restaurant in Villa Rosa Kempinski Hotel, and I couldn’t resist getting dressed up and taking full advantage of it. This weekend we had lunch at Sarabi Bar & Restaurant located on the rooftop of Sankara Hotel in Westlands, Nairobi.
It's an open-air restaurant that surrounds the hotel’s rooftop pool and is known for its signature cocktails and tapas-style shared plates. However, we were there to sample something a bit different. Rarely do I go on vacation and ask myself, “Where’s the food I’m being served coming from?”
But hopefully our recent visit to Ololo Safari Lodge will change that… I've never been one to celebrate my birthday for more than one or two days. However, this time round it seemed only right to do so, having finally reached the 3rd floor!😄🎊🎉
Seeing as we'd enjoyed a hearty meal at Lucca Restaurant during our stay at Villa Rosa Kempinski, Nairobi - and had later had a mouth-watering pizza from there as well - it seemed only right for us to go back and try their buffet as well. Christmas time is always a special time of the year, especially when I get to spend it with my family.
This year, I spent it with my parents, and we had lunch together at The View restaurant. The View is a revolving restaurant located on the top floor of Mövenpick Hotel in Nairobi. I'd been to the restaurant once before with some friends and had vowed to go back, seeing as we couldn't stay long then. It turns out that choosing to go back on Christmas day was a wonderful idea! 😊 Yesterday, I had the privilege of representing East Africa Chef at the 10th IHTI Graduation Ceremony.
IHTI stands for International Hotel & Tourism Institute and is a hospitality and tourism school located in Nairobi. East Africa Chef was one of the sponsors of the event; and a member of our team was expected to present an award at the event, hence my presence there. Seeing as I'd never attended a graduation of this kind before, I didn't know what to expect. Nevertheless, I was really looking forward to it... I came across the Bezuidenhout Food Truck Festival by chance in the summer of 2017.
I was doing my grocery shopping when I saw a bright leaflet hanging on the notice board in the grocery store, advertising a food truck festival that would be taking place in early May, right in the area where I live - Bezuidenhout. Needless to say, I was excited at the thought of attending. As it happens, my sister was visiting that summer, and so we decided to check it out together. As we had other plans on the day that we decided to pass by the festival, we only stayed long enough to have a snack. But this year, we decided to dedicate an entire afternoon to it. Two things I always take into consideration whenever I'm eating out are whether the portions served are filling, and whether they match the amount of money I'm paying for them.
It was no different when my sisters came to visit me a few weeks ago. During their visit, we stayed at a hotel in Amsterdam and planned to explore as much of the city as possible in the few days we had together. That meant that we had little time for other things - such as grabbing a bite to eat. However, we still wanted the meals we did have time for to be enjoyable and filling, and we hoped we'd find a nice restaurant nearby where we could get just that... Whenever I ask one of my classmates where I can grab a quick but tasty bite to eat in between classes, the answer I usually get is, "You should try Bagels and Beans!"
However, despite its obvious popularity, I was still reluctant to eat at Bagels & Beans Café. For starters, I'm not one to go with the crowd - especially when it comes to food; secondly, I've never really understood bagels or felt the urge to try them out. Nevertheless, it's exactly where I ended up one chilly Saturday afternoon... |
