Yesterday, I had the privilege of representing East Africa Chef at the 10th IHTI Graduation Ceremony. IHTI stands for International Hotel & Tourism Institute and is a hospitality and tourism school located in Nairobi. East Africa Chef was one of the sponsors of the event; and a member of our team was expected to present an award at the event, hence my presence there. Seeing as I'd never attended a graduation of this kind before, I didn't know what to expect. Nevertheless, I was really looking forward to it... I attended the event with a colleague, and we arrived there just before the event began. For this first part of the event, we were entertained by some of the students, who performed a variety of traditional as well as modern dances for us. Afterwards, the principal of the school and the guests of honour gave their speeches; and then the graduation ceremony finally began. It ended up being quite similar to my own graduation ceremony - minus the chef uniforms instead of graduation gowns. 😄In fact, it brought back to mind a lot of memories from my own graduation day. Each of the graduands was awarded with a certificate, and those who performed extremely well received awards as their classmates cheered them on. It was eye-opening to hear about the challenges the students had to face on their culinary journey, and I'm happy to say that it made me appreciate chefs and the culinary industry a lot more than I did before. Each of the guests received a cupcake made by the students at the school, which I thought was a nice gesture. And after the event, we mingled and enjoyed refreshments prepared by the culinary team at Carnivore restaurant in Nairobi. Congratulations to the IHTI class of 2019, I wish you nothing but the best in your future careers in the hospitality industry!🎉🎊
