This year started off pretty rough.
I'd just moved back to the Netherlands, and it was taking me much longer than I thought it would to settle down. I'd assumed that I'd be moving back to Leiden, but as fate would have it, I ended up moving to the Hague - something that took me quite some time to mentally get used to. The process of finding a place to stay here at the beginning of the year isn't easy; and by the time I'd finally found one and physically made the move here, I needed a break.
As luck would have it, a holiday in Gran Canaria turned out to be that break! 😊
Gran Canaria is the biggest of the Spanish islands that make up the Canary Islands. The average temperature there at the time was about 21 degrees Celsius - 14 whole degrees more than the temperature here in the Netherlands - which is one of the main reasons why we chose to holiday there. Not only was I looking forward to getting some much needed R&R on this trip, but I was also really looking forward to seeing my family again! 😃
Seeing as I've had to grow up away from my family for most of my life, I cherish whatever time I get to spend with them - and this time was no different. I was meeting my sister Sandy, my nieces Faith and Rebecca & my nephew, Sam there. We were staying at a hotel called Barcelo Margaritas in an area called Playa des Inglés.
I arrived at the hotel shortly after Sandy and the children did, and was having a bit of a problem checking in when I heard a familiar voice shout, "We made it!" It was Faith, expressing her joy at making it down the flight of stairs from their room in one piece. Rebecca & Sam followed closely behind her, and as soon as we saw each other, we ran into each other's arms - just like in the movies! Lol. 😄It's still one of my favourite memories of the whole trip to date. ☺
It didn't take us long to settle down after that. Soon we had changed into our swimming costumes and were lounging by the pool, catching up on the last few years. The next few days were filled with lots of fun which included: swimming, a session of water aerobics, a game of "Crazy Golf", a salsa lesson and a boat cruise to Puerto de Mogán.
We'd just gotten used to having each other around when it was time to say goodbye. As sad as that was, however, I'm glad that we got to see each other again after so long and I'm already looking forward to the next time we do. 😊
I used a Nikon D5100 camera this time round - much lighter than my usual Canon. I wish I'd tested it out a bit more before I decided to go on holiday with it, but overall it served me well. I must say, though, that the lens was a bit disappointing in terms of zooming in & out. Nevertheless, I was still able to get some good shots and take high quality videos.
I sometimes used my iPhone to capture certain things - mostly when I wasn't sure I'd be able to switch on the camera and position it in time to get the shot I wanted - but the Nikon did most of the work. Let me know what you guys think, though - after browsing through the pictures & watching the video - Yay or Nay?
Also, a HUGE thank you to Barcelo Margaritas Hotel for their top-of-the-notch hospitality. Not only was it worth every single penny in terms of accommodation, but the staff also managed to make our holiday that much more memorable. If you're planning a trip soon & have the option of staying at one of their hotels, do it!
I can assure you that you won't regret it. 😉
I find it easier and more effective to write down how I feel rather than to say it.
