"I just booked your flight. You leave tomorrow morning," said Mum's message.
The news was surprising, to say the least, seeing as a week before then I hadn't even been sure I'd be travelling at all! 😯Nevertheless, I mentally hopped on board the last-minute plans, and started packing for my trip. 🕶🎒🛫
We were going to Portugal for Christmas - one of the European countries that I've been looking forward to visiting for a while now. 😃 🇵🇹 I have to admit, though, that I didn't know much about it before we travelled; and that fact was emphasized more and more during our first few days there...
I was just getting ready to settle down in my room when the doorbell rang.🚪
As far as I knew, none of us were expecting a guest, and so I debated answering it for a few seconds. Just then, my housemate - who had only just gone into the bathroom - suddenly came out & informed me that she'd ordered a pizza online a few minutes ago, and suspected that it might be the pizza delivery guy at the door. Her suspicions were confirmed when I answered the door bell phone; and before she could even ask, I informed him that I'd be right down to get the pizza from him on her behalf.
I still remember how I felt knowing that I was doing her a favour - no matter how small it was. It's the feeling I always get when I can be of help to someone. 🤗What I hadn't realized, however, was how much this feeling changed when the roles were reversed...
One of the biggest regrets I have of the years I spent in the UK is how little I travelled within the country while I was living there.
In the months following my move there from Kenya (my home country - which I haven't seen much of either by the way 😩) , my mum & I visited a few popular places (Wembley Stadium being the only one I remember clearly, lol); a year or two later, we tried our hand at local tourism yet again and visited Windsor Castle, Buckingham Palace & the Big Ben - also in London. However, there are so many other places I planned to visit, but never did.😔
That's why I resolved to do things differently once I moved to the Netherlands.
Ever since I moved to the Netherlands, my Mum has been planning to come down here for a visit. Little did we know that it would take almost two years before she actually did so. She eventually came to the Netherlands this past summer, and she was here for just under a week; and together we explored parts of the country that even I hadn't seen yet.
I'd assumed that we would book a hotel here in the Hague for the duration of her stay, but she wanted something different; and so we ended up staying at the SS Rotterdam.🛳
I find it easier and more effective to write down how I feel rather than to say it.
